History of the Logo

According to the company’s website, in 1928 Gerber considered her photo for a baby food advertising campaign, which became the company’s emblem in 1931.

Dorothy Hope Smith, Cook’s neighbour and an artist, produced a charcoal portrait of her when she was five months old and entered it in a contest for the company’s national marketing campaign for baby food.

Cook said in a 1998 interview with The Associated Press that her mother told her as a child that she was the baby in the illustration. What could be more nice than being a symbol for baby food, she asked?

Her identity remained concealed for decades, until 1978. There was a nationwide vote done to determine who the original Gerber baby was, with replies ranging from luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor to Bob Dole.

Cook told CBS Sunday Morning in 2013: “I was probably about 3 years old when my mother pointed to a baby food jar and said it was my picture. I thought it was extremely beautiful. All infants are adorable. The popularity of this drawing is due to the artist’s ability to portray the allure of infants.
