But researchers believe connected clothing is the first wave of technology. Much more ambitious ideas are currently in development. Shape-shifting fabrics are being developed at the University of New South Wales in Australia. According to senior lecturer Thanh Nho Do, his team has created tiny silicon tubes, similar in size to yarn and inspired by muscle fibers. They can be woven into sheets of fabric. These tubes are activated by electronic or thermal stimulation and can force the tissue into pre-programmed positions.

Though, the team has to solve several problems. In particular, these robotic tubes will need to be downsized so that they can be woven into fabric without adding bulk. Now their diameter is 5 mm, and the target is 0.1 mm, which is approximately the size of the average syringe needle tip. The thickness of the yarn can be on average 3 to 4 mm.

Yet, making innovative smart clothes requires giving fabrics the processing power to track physiological cues and control the technology. Researchers are trying to create fabrics that can process the data generated by human skin and turn them into commands that clothes obey.

To that end, the researchers have created fibers with hundreds of silicon microchips to send digital signals. This is necessary so that the clothes track things like heart rate or leg swelling. The fibers are small enough to be sewn into fabric with a needle and will last at least 10 washes.

Rechargeable Clothes

Others at the institute have also created rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in the form of extra-long fibers. They can be woven into the fabric, providing textiles with energy without an external power source.

Though another problem has shown itself and that is the design. It should look, feel and wash exactly like the fabric you are wearing right now. Also, the researchers note that such a lab has teamed up with industrial designers from the Rhode Island School of Design to tackle key challenges.

Before smart textiles realize their full potential, many challenges must be overcome. In particular, it will be challenging to make these fiber and technology-filled garments durable enough to withstand many washes.

Besides, the researchers will have to find the best way to place robotic fibers in tissues and ensure low-weight power supplies. They think it is real to develop and make, though it might take some time.
