The Last of Us on HBO Max: What Is It About?

A Scene From HBO’s “The Last of Us” HBO’s Max, written and directed by Neil Druckmann, comes to life the critically acclaimed video game series from 2013.

Druckmann is accompanied by Chornobyl’s inventor, Craig Mazin, as well as the game’s original creators, Naughty Dog, and composer, Gustavo Santaolalla.

The show, like the game, is set in a dystopian America 20 years after a fungal infection has killed out most of the population.

One of the few remaining survivors, Joel, is charged with sneaking Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of the safe zone, and what they find beyond is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.

According to HBO Max, the official plot summary for The Last of Us goes as follows: “Story takes place 20 years after contemporary civilization has been destroyed, and is based on the critically renowned video game The Last of Us, produced by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation platforms. A hardened survivor named Joel is recruited to help a young girl named Ellie, who is just 14 years old, escape a restrictive quarantine zone. After accepting what seems like a simple job, they find themselves forced to travel throughout the United States and rely on each other for survival.”

Anyone who has played The Last of Us on PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 will recognize this immediately as the game’s plot. At the very least, this proves that the show intends to stay true to its inspiration.

Druckmann elaborated on his previous indications about how the show would diverge from the game in an interview with IGN(opens in new tab). Despite some episodes “deviating tremendously to much better effect because we are dealing with a new medium,” he acknowledged that the dialogue was copied verbatim from the game.

Don’t worry if you’re a fan who is concerned that HBO will be overly involved. Druckmann himself was pleased by the deviations, saying, “Some of my favorite episodes so far have veered substantially from the tale, and I can’t wait for people to see them.”

When speaking to the BBC, Mazin said, “the adjustments that we’re doing are aimed to flesh things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enrich.” Clearly, the game’s plot will adhere to its basic outline, and it will be similar to the one we all know and wept over in 2013.
