Since HBO announced that a prequel series focusing on the Targaryen dynasty will debut in October 2019, fans of Game of Thrones have been holding their breath. It is based on the 2018 novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin, which contains the House Targaryen’s words. It will play place around 200 years before the events of HBO’s Game of Thrones and will focus mostly on the Targaryen family’s political activities.
With each season of Game of Thrones, audiences learned more about the history of the Targaryen family, and the number of surviving family members decreased. Viserys was the first to die after Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) poured molten gold over his head for threatening his “Khaleesi,” Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). Maester Aemon (late Peter Vaughan) of the Night’s Watch is revealed to be the brother of Aerys II, the “Mad King” (David Rintoul).
Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) reveals to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) that Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) is truly the son of Aegon, Daenerys’ older brother, and Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark’s younger sister. As the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, he would have succeeded to the Iron Throne next in line.
While fans of the novels and the television series had varying emotions to the final season of Game of Thrones, all attention has now switched to the Targaryens in anticipation of new Westerosi content.
What Is the House of the Dragon’s Plot?
It is well knowledge that the Targaryens rose to prominence due to their dragons. Their dynasty has dominated for decades. House of the Dragon will represent the “beginning of the decline” for House Targaryen and the events leading up to “Dance of Dragons,” the family’s civil war.
Following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the civil war breaks out due to a conflict over his successor (Paddy Considine). His firstborn daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, aspires to be the first woman to sit on the Iron Throne. Milly Alcock (Upright) will portray the younger Princess Rhaenyra, while Emma D’Arcy will portray the older version (Truth Seekers). Her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), is assumed to be the heir apparent and is vying for the throne until it is revealed that Princess Rhaenyra has the birthright to the throne.
Both Rhaenyra and Daemon are adept Dragon Riders, similar to Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. Before the Night King murdered one of the three dragons, Viserion, and transformed him into an undead ice dragon, they held a huge advantage.
Without cheating and checking the ending of “Dance of Dragons,” one thing is certain: this civil war signals the beginning of the protracted decline of the Targaryen dynasty, culminating in the “Mad King” and later Daenerys, the “Mad Queen.”
