The UK death metal heavyweights Cancer are back with the news that their new album, Inverted World, will be released on Peaceville on April 25.
Cancer has been producing some of the genre’s most harsh and unyielding songs for more than 35 years. Their much awaited sequel to Shadow Gripped (2018), Inverted World, marks their comeback.
Their trademark combination of guttural vocals, relentless aggression, and serrated riffs is expected to resurface in this album. Anticipate a somber and intense voyage into existential dread, corruption, and dystopia.
With the release of their iconic debut album, To The Gory End, and their equally renowned Death Shall Rise album, which notably featured death metal maestro James Murphy on lead guitars, Cancer exploded onto the UK extreme metal scene more than 35 years ago and gained a strong international following in the early years of their careers.
A stint with Warner Music’s big label EastWest followed the band’s success with their follow-up album, The Sins of Mankind. After a protracted hiatus, the band returned in 2018 with their Peaceville debut and comeback release, Shadow Gripped, which brought the original core trio back together for the first time since 1995. The band’s savage, thrash-tinged deathly odes to the macabre won over both new and old fans.
In Inverted World, Cancer’s eighth full-length album, founding member and vocalist/guitarist/songwriter John Walker leads a now-revamped quartet in a year that also commemorates the 35th anniversary of the genre-classic debut, To The Gory End.
The dark and murky world of manipulation and barbarism, both past and present, is explored in Inverted World, a relentless assault of brilliant songwriting and vicious hooks.
Themes pertaining to cult mentalities and shadowy entities, such as brainwashing people into compliance and the weaponization of religion, are explored. The song “Corrosive” also revives the well-known and ancient story of the acid bath killer, which is an added bonus for the band’s fans in particular.
Simón Da Silva recorded Inverted World at The Empty Hall Studio, while V. Santura (of Triptykon, Obscura, Pestilence, Dark Fortress, and other albums) mixed it at Woodshed Studio.
Limited editions of Inverted World will be available on CD, online, and on purple and black vinyl. Full lyrics are printed on the inner sleeve of vinyl copies, and they are included in a 12-page booklet on CD editions.
