The Rings of Power is in preproduction, and filming will begin this spring at the show’s new production location, Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom. Fans have been waiting for the show’s renewal news since the second season finale aired in October.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the program is taking a significant time jump into the upcoming episodes, with Sauron already creating the iconic One Ring.
Here’s the latest logline: “Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”
The company also revealed its director lineup for the third season, which comprises two returning names and one new one. Charlotte Brandstrom (Shōgun), an International Emmy award nominee, returns for a third season after directing two episodes in season one and five in season two.
Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time), who helmed three episodes in Season 2, is also returning. Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, The Walking Dead) is the newcomer to season three.
Alongside Vickers as Sauron, the large cast has included actors like Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Markella Kavenagh as Nori Brandyfoot, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Benjamin Walker as High King Gil-galad, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Queen Regent Míriel, Owain Arthur as Prince Durin IV, Sophia Nomvete as Disa, Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Daniel Weyman as The Stranger, who was later revealed to be Gandalf the Grey, and Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor in the first two seasons.
It’s safe to assume that some of these cast members won’t be returning for Season 3 following the events of Season 2.
The first season of The Rings of Power remains Prime Video’s most popular TV launch, while the second season is the streamer’s most-watched returning season in terms of hours seen. According to Amazon, the show has been watched by 170 million people globally, and it has been a major driver of new Prime membership signups.
