A series order for a “Blue Bloods Universe expansion” starring Donnie Wahlberg, a series veteran, was revealed by CBS on Tuesday afternoon.
Wahlberg’s character Danny Reagan joins the Boston Police Department in the tentatively named spinoff, Boston Blue. Detective Lena Peters, the oldest daughter of a well-known law enforcement family, will be his colleague there.
The show is scheduled to make its CBS debut in the 2025–2026 television season.
Alongside Wahlberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, and KristieAnne Reed, Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (from The Blacklist, L.A.’s Finest, and Alert: MPU) will executive-produce and serve as showrunners.
This series was not intended to be a Blue Bloods spin-off, according to Deadline, which broke the story on Boston Blue first.
The only Wahlberg-led spin-off that had been considered (but rejected) would have moved Danny to Texas. Instead, Sonnier and Margolis had created a television show that would center on a Boston police family whose oldest daughter is paired with a recent LAPD transfer. That transfer is now Danny from the NYPD.
The most recent of several spinoffs in the CBS/Paramount pipeline is Boston Blue. Sheriff Country, which will debut in the 2025–2026 TV season and stars Morena Baccarin, and Fire Country: Surfside, which would be helmed by Jared Padalecki, are both products of Fire Country.
The Neighborhood is currently developing two spinoffs, the first of which is designated for Paramount+; An FBI: CIA backdoor pilot will air as a spingtime episode of FBI, The Equalizer recently cast a spinoff that will air as a backdoor pilot this season, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva, the newest addition to the NCIS-verse, is anticipated to debut on Paramount+ this year.
