On March 12, Disney+ will stream “Moana 2,” the follow-up to the Oscar-nominated movie about a young Polynesian woman who sets out to break an old curse.
“Moana 2” was reimagined as a movie with a theatrical release after first being conceived as a Disney+ TV series for streaming. Disney reportedly made the change as a strategic move to increase sales and profitability. It paid off, as “Moana 2” became the third highest-grossing film of 2024 and earned over $1 billion at the box office.
Three years later, the film “reunites Moana and Maui for a vast new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers.” Moana must travel to the distant oceans of Oceania and into perilous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever experienced after getting an unexpected call from her navigational ancestors.
Each of the three directors, David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, made their directing debuts with “Moana 2.” In the sequel, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear took the place of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and composed the music for the first movie.
With Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returning as shapeshifting oceanic trickster Maui, Auli’i Cravalho made a comeback to voice Moana. Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, and Rose Matafeo were also part of the cast.
Moana, the film’s heroine and title character, “doesn’t have much inner journey left, but the movie has vibrant monsters and a flow of movement that keeps your eyeballs dancing,” according to Variety’s chief film reviewer Owen Gleiberman.
