Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton have joined forces to deliver a vintage video adaption for Carpenter’s “Please Please Please.”
On Friday, February 14, the 25-year-old singer released a collaborative performance of her 2024 song “Please Please Please” for the new deluxe edition of her album Short n’ Sweet, which also came out on Valentine’s Day.
Teaming up with Parton, 79, for the duet, the musicians put a country spin on the pop single and filmed a vintage-inspired music video.
Keoghan, 32, famously appeared in the original music video for “Please Please Please” while the couple was dating. The video shows the former couple starting a relationship after being released from jail, but when Keoghan returns to his criminal ways and is arrested again, Carpenter takes matters into her own hands, handcuffing him to a chair and taping his mouth shut before kissing him on the lips and abandoning him in an empty warehouse.
Carpenter and Parton hit the road in a truck in the new music video, singing the song’s lyrics before Parton is shown handing Carpenter a shovel in the back of the vehicle. The police quickly catch up with the couple and begin following them, with the camera moving to a male chained in the back of the vehicle with a sack on his head and wearing the same attire as Keoghan in the original film.
Carpenter shared a clip of the music video on her Instagram page, saying she was “so honored” to work with music superstar Parton.
Carpenter released the original music video for her Jack Antonoff-produced single in June 2024.
According to a press release acquired by PEOPLE, the video concludes with Carpenter pulling over and shaking her head while the individual in the back attempts to yell and bang on the truck.
The song also features a lyric change, with Carpenter and Parton taking it in turns to sing, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, like the others,” a switch-up from the original, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, mother——.” When “Please Please Please” was first released, it was believed to contain plenty of cheeky lyrical references to the Saltburn star, including the line, “I heard that you’re an actor, so act like a stand-up guy.”
Carpenter and Keoghan dated for approximately a year before deciding to split up, according to PEOPLE.
The former couple made their red carpet debut at the 2024 Met Gala.
Meanwhile, in addition to the duet with Parton, the two-time Grammy winner’s new deluxe version includes four additional songs, including “Busy Woman,” which she performed live on her sold-out Short ‘n’ Sweet tour.
