George A. Romero was born George Andrew Romero in New York City on February 4, 1940. He was the son of commercial artist George Romero and Anne Dvorsky. His mother was of Lithuanian heritage, while his father, born in Spain, moved to Cuba as a child.
George grew up in the Bronx and frequently took the subway into Manhattan to rent film reels. According to reports, Romero and Martin Scorsese were the only two persons who rented the 1951 film “The Tales of Hoffmann” many times.
George attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and graduated from the College of Fine Arts in 1960.

George directed more than 20 films, including “Season of the Witch” (1973), “Dawn of the Dead” (1978), “Creepshow” (1982), “Day of the Dead” (1985), “Monkey Shines” (1988), “The Dark Half” (1993), and “Diary of the Dead” (2007), and he also wrote, produced, edited, and appeared in several of them.
From 1983 to 1988, Romero created and executive produced the syndicated horror anthology series “Tales from the Darkside,” for which he also wrote four episodes. After a brief fight with lung cancer, George died on July 16, 2017, at the age of 77.
