Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that she will remain at Lucasfilm, addressing rumors that she was retiring. She stressed that she is not leaving her position anytime soon, although she did talk about succession planning with Disney executives.
New information about Lucasfilm’s strategy, leadership changes, and impending Star Wars movies keeps coming to light.
Kathleen Kennedy has stated that she will not be leaving Lucasfilm anytime soon. “I am not retiring,” she said in a Deadline interview. I’m not going to stop making movies. I’ll die producing movies.
“We have every intention of making an announcement months or a year down the road,” she said, adding that she has been collaborating with Disney CEO Bob Iger and co-chairman Alan Bergman on a long-term succession plan. We are all on the same page about what it will be, and I’m not stopping.
Kennedy is now producing Shawn Levy’s next Star Wars movie and The Mandalorian & Grogu. She affirmed that Levy’s film, which is said to star Ryan Gosling, will follow The Mandalorian & Grogu as the following theatrical release.
Kennedy responded to rumors of a chaotic change at Lucasfilm by saying, “Chaos? Because we are fully aware of the plan, there has never been any chaos. And as I mentioned earlier, we have been discussing it constantly for the past few years.
“There’s just an internal process that goes on inside a large corporation and a publicly held company,” Kennedy said when asked about her successor, acknowledging that internal candidates are being evaluated but declining to name any.
“Everything that we do inside of Lucasfilm is in lockstep and in communication with Disney,” she said, underscoring the alignment of Lucasfilm’s strategy with Disney’s. As you could anticipate, the communication has been entirely cooperative.
Kennedy also revealed that a number of Star Wars films, including those directed by Simon Kinberg, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi, are now in development. “To be safe, I’d say three or four right now,” she added, adding that scheduling talent is a crucial component of project timetables.
She stated, “I don’t know if I’m going to say that, but yeah, it’s possible,” in response to a question concerning her ongoing involvement.
