Project Runway Contestant Sha’Vi Lewis Passes Away at 39

Sha’Vi Lewis (full name Franklin “ShaVi” Lewis Frierson Jr.), a Project Runway alum, passed away. His age was 39.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 25, his aunt Deidra DivaDoll Elkerson confirmed the season 18 contestant’s passing. Lewis’ cause of death was not disclosed by his family. He passed away on Monday, February 24, according to TMZ.

“Sha’Vi Lewis, my amazing, gifted nephew, is no longer here. He will no longer welcome me with “Hey Auntie Diva,” she said. Elkerson urged people to pray for Lewis’s family, which includes his sister Akira Frierson Wood, brother Troy Solomon Frierson, father Franklin Frierson, and mother Joyce Solomon-Frierson.

“I am certain that he is in a far better place now. With so many loved ones who had already passed by, I can only image the reception he had when he arrived at those pearly gates,” she added. “He is spending a wonderful time with his grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and close friends.”

“When we realize that our star has been cast into eternity, we are in a state of disbelief. We will keep working to come to terms with a future without you as the days go by,” his sister Akira told TMZ. “We knew Sha’vi was and is fantastic, even though the rest of the world is only now becoming aware of his name! As we grieve the passing of Franklin Shavi Lewis Frierson Jr., our loved one, please keep praying.

Lewis went to Clark Atlanta University after growing up in New Jersey. He worked as creative director for the menswear brand Stephen F, launched his own clothing line, and followed fashion design after graduating. He also created designs for Pose season 2 and for celebrities like Cynthia Bailey.

In 2019, Lewis participated in the 18th season of Project Runway. After being sent home in the sixth episode, he finished in tenth place.

On Tuesday, his fellow competitors Nancy Volpe Beringer and Brittany Allen expressed their sorrow at his passing.

Allen also included Lewis’ Instagram Stories. “Hold your pals close.” There are moments when you question WHEN you will see them again. She said as the description for the Instagram Stories, “Not if you will see them again.” It simply doesn’t feel real 💔.

On Tuesday, Volpe Beringer also wrote a touching ode to Lewis on Instagram. If you’re lucky, you may meet someone who immediately fills your heart and soul with a bond and love that you know will last a lifetime. You were the person in my life, Shavi Lewis. My family became yours.

“And without your unwavering love, contagious humor, and pure spirit, I just don’t know how to make sense of it or navigate my life,” she added. However, I am aware that I am fortunate to have had you in my life and that you will always be a bright light for your friends, family, and the fashion industry, Shavi. I shall always love you and miss you. May you rest in peace.
