The rumble and tumble is being incorporated into surf and turf by Nicolas Cage.

“The Surfer,” a psychological thriller starring the legendary actor, is about a guy battling local surfers in a turf battle to recapture his beachside house.

In the film, Cage plays an anonymous character who takes his teenage son, Finn Little, to the beach in Australia where he grew up. After his father was discovered dead on the same beach when he was a teenager, his character, an Australian, relocated to California. He now want to return to his Australian roots in the town, but the inhabitants are not very happy about his return.

“A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son,” the blurb says. However, a group of locals who abide by the motto “don’t live here, don’t surf here” prevent him from surfing. The man, humiliated and furious, is pulled into a battle that intensifies in tandem with the summer’s oppressive heat and strains him to the limit.

Nic Cassim, Julian McMahon, and Alexander Bertrand also feature. The film is produced by Cage, Brunella Coccighlia, James Grandison, Robert Connolly, James Harris, Leonora Darby, and Nathan Klingher.

A psychological thriller-comedy with bizarre aspects is how the film is marketed. Thomas Martin wrote the script, which is directed by Lorcan Finnegan. “The Surfer” made its debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight segment.

Particularly with its artistic references to Peter Weir and George Miller, the IndieWire review noted the references to Australian New Wave film from the 1970s. Other film analogies include the 1971 films “Walkabout” by Nicolas Roeg and “Wake in Fright” by Ted Kotcheff.

“There are plenty of crazy moments that will undoubtedly go viral on social media with all traces of their tragic context removed,” the review says, for any time travelers from the early 2010s who still see Nicolas Cage as a meme resource above all else.

“In one moment of desperation, his character contemplates feasting on a dead rat, before opting to instead store it in his pocket as his lone companion in the limbo of the car park. It is still just a rat and Nic Cage, in spite of all the rage.

Cage will next play the lead in David O. Russell’s biopic “Madden,” which is set in the 1970s and centers on NFL icon John Madden. During his time as the Oakland Raiders’ coach, Cage is playing the title role.
