Volkswagen It will build its $2.2 billion, all-electric plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. The modern facility will be located near the company’s headquarters and will produce about 250,000 vehicles annually. The decision to build the new plant came after Volkswagen realized that it was easier to build a new plant from scratch than to retrofit existing facilities.

The new Wolfsburg plant will oversee production of Volkswagen’s flagship car Trinity sedan. Scheduled to launch in 2026, the Trinity will be similar in size to the Passat and appeal to the mass market. It is said to have a range of over 435 miles per charge and is capable of Level 4 self-driving. Prices should start around €35,000 ($38,300).

Volkswagen aims for a 10-hour production run for each Trinity from start to finish. The Trinity will be the first electric car based on VW Group’s electric SSP “super platform” – a chassis that will eventually be used by Audi, Porsche, Skoda and SEAT as well.

Another Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, which opened in 1938, currently produces about three times as many vehicles as this new electric facility is intended to produce. However, by opening a plant only for electric vehicles, Volkswagen can maintain its production plans for ICE vehicles, such as the Golf, Tiguan and Touareg.

This news comes just days after receiving Tesla Final approval to produce Giga Berlin.
