Irene Cara Escalera (March 18, 1959 – November 25, 2022) was an American singer, composer, and actress best known for her portrayal of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical film Fame, as well as her version of the film’s title song “Fame,” which reached number one in multiple countries.
Cara co-wrote and sang the song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” (from the film Flashdance) in 1983, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984. Prior to her fame with Fame, Cara starred as Sparkle Williams in the original 1976 musical drama picture Sparkle.
On November 25, 2022, she died at the age of 63 years. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 1984, she received a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Irene’s family has asked for privacy as they deal with their loss. She was a wonderfully brilliant soul whose music and pictures will live on in perpetuity. Funeral services are being organized, and a memorial for her fans will be held at a later date.”
Three months after her death, her cause of death is discovered. She died as a result of high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Her death was caused by arteriosclerosis and hypertensive heart disease. Irene was also diabetic.
