Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, District of Columbia, to Elizabeth and Roy Jackson. He was their only child. His mother grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and he had minimal to no contact with his father at this time. His maternal grandmother raised his mother.
When he graduated from the all-black Riverside High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he completed his education at three different institutions. As a result, he chose to further his education by enrolling at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and beginning his marine biology studies there.

After the protests, Jackson was charged with illegal confinement, a second-degree felony, and ultimately found guilty of the charge. In addition, he was granted a two-year probationary period.
Eventually, he returned to school and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1972. While suspended from his position in Los Angeles, he worked as a social worker.

Before moving to New York in 1976 from Atlanta, Jackson appeared in a number of plays and television films. Ten years later, he continued to perform on stage.
