It’s been three months since the deaths of Henry and Sam. It’s snowing outside. As a guy gets home from rabbit hunting, he discovers Joel holding his wife at gunpoint.
Joel questions him about Tommy and the Fireflies. For a long time, the pair has been hiding here. The Fireflies and Tommy are unknown to them.
Joel then seeks westward advice. The man tells him to travel east because west of the river is death. They have never seen anyone living west in all their years here.
Dead bodies, some sick, cover the place. The discovery frightens Joel but not Ellie. Both go west safely. They chat about their dreams and where they’ll travel once Joel takes Ellie to the Fireflies’ doctors.
Near the River of Death, the pair is besieged by horsemen. A dog sniffs Joel and Ellie for infection. Ellie, who has been bitten twice, is spared by the dog. Joel is recognized by a woman.
They go to Jackson, a town that survived the pandemic and lived normally. Christmas preparations include stores, cattle, and more.
Joel meets his brother Tommy in Jackson. Joel and Ellie finally had a good lunch. Food makes Ellie rude. Joel does the same when Tommy says Maria, his wife, brought them here.
Joel and Tommy talk alone, and Tommy tells Joel about the University of Eastern Colorado Fireflies base. Joel asks Tommy to assist him to escort Ellie without disclosing everything.
Tommy claims he cannot. Tommy argues with Joel after he stops replying on the radio. Tommy says he doesn’t want to come because Maria is pregnant and he’ll be a good parent.
Tommy responds to Joel’s compliment on his fatherhood by adding that his life doesn’t have to halt because Joel’s did.
Maria dresses and cuts Ellie. Tommy’s memorial blackboard for Kevin and Sarah is at Maria’s house. Ellie discovers Kevin and Sarah are Maria and Joel’s children. She finally understands Joel. Maria then takes Ellie to the movies.
Tommy apologizes to Joel in a shop. Joel asks Tommy if attending that university is suicide. Joel handles everything. Joel informs Tommy about Ellie being immune, Tess dying, and Henry killing his younger brother.
Joel admits he cannot protect Ellie. Ellie shooting a kid to save Joel because he was slow and deaf still haunts him. Joel experiences nightmares he forgets and feels like his heart will stop beating. Joel thinks Ellie will die with him.

She is astonished to learn that females her age were primarily concerned about boys and clothes before the pandemic.

They find Joel stealing a horse. Ellie wonders if he is saying goodbye. Joel asks Ellie who she wants to travel with.
Ellie picks Joel instinctively. Tommy says they belong in Jackson. Joel and Ellie leave. Ellie discovers Joel was a contractor before the epidemic.
Monkeys live at Eastern Colorado University. Medical supplies suggest doctors were here. Joel finds a list of things these former residents should take.
Their maps show Salt Lake City. Before Joel and Ellie could depart, raiders came for them. Joel and Ellie sneak away, but the raider attacks. Joel watches him. Joel is stabbed too.
The pair rides away before the other raiders can catch them. Joel faints after leaving the intruders. Ellie consoles him. She will be alone if he dies.
