It looks like Marvel Studios may have given away a lot about Geraldine Viswanathan’s role in Thunderbolts in 2025.

Marvel Studios has not revealed much about the role of the Drive-Away Dolls and Blockers star, despite the fact that the remainder of the ensemble include a number of performers who are returning to the MCU as anti-heroes, such as Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and David Harbour as Red Guardian.

The only description of the role—which Ayo Edebiri originally had before dropping out—is that of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine’s secretary.

Marvel may have just given away a major spoiler when the Thunderbolts* ensemble made an appearance on stage at San Diego Comic-Con.

They did not disclose Viswanathan’s character at the Hall H event. A video of the casts of Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps strolling the press line while wearing their respective character identities was posted on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube page.

Geraldine Viswanathan is given credit as Mel, which may be a portmanteau for Melissa and implies that she may be Songbird in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Who Is Marvel Comics’ Songbird? And Is She Making Thunderbolt Appearances?

Songbird Marvel

Developed by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and John Byrne, Melissa Gold made her comic book debut in Marvel Two-in-One #54 in August of 1979. Her abilities are supersonic screams, as her name suggests. She was once a villain known as Screaming Mimi.

She then took up the code name Songbird and was a member of the Thunderbolts’ original cast, an assassination squad dressed like heroes. Songbird discovered that she relished her role as a hero, turned her life around, and even joined the Mighty Avengers.

However, she is best recognized for being a member of the Thunderbolts*, having joined the team at its inception and playing a significant role in its rebirth during the Civil War storyline.

Although Thunderbolts* is concentrating on using well-known MCU characters for its cast, it’s likely that the movie is setting the stage for other characters to eventually join the group. It appears likely that Viswanathan is portraying Mel because the character shares a name with a comic book character who is frequently linked to the squad.

Mel appears in Thunderbolts. Thunderbolts* may serve as both the team’s and Viswanathan’s genesis narrative, ultimately transforming him into Songbird. While Lewis Pullman’s apparent role as The Sentry has garnered the majority of attention, Marvel Studios also seems to be subtly revealing another comic book figure.

Marvel Studios definitely wants to keep rising talent Viswanathan on staff for more films. Thunderbolts could only be the start.
