The popular 2019 action adventure Control by Remedy Entertainment reportedly features an appearance by Vice President Kamala Harris. Although one of Control’s assets appears to have been made using her likeness, the game does not show the presumed Democratic presidential contender as she actually is.
A mysterious hub of power in New York City that is essential to the plot of the game, Control’s Oldest House, is where one can spot Harris’s likeness. Twelve posters of missing people can be found on a whiteboard located in a skyscraper hallway that leads to an elevator.
Three of the larger posters in this group show a lady who resembles Harris a great deal, but it says she’s Jane Farland.
The Control Doppelganger of Kamala Harris Was Previously Identified in 2019
Not long after the game’s August 2019 release, when Harris was still competing in the Democratic primary and almost a full year before Joe Biden named her as his vice candidate, one astute fan had already seen Harris’s Control twin.
After making similar revelations on social media, a number of other players made the same discovery in the years that followed. Stephen Totilo stated in a recent issue of his Game File newsletter that he used a facial recognition software to analyze the portrait and that the results showed a consistent match between the missing person poster and other pictures of Harris.
The picture was most likely obtained from Harris’s official Senate portrait, which was shot in 2017 following her sworn in as a US senator for California. Despite the fact that Remedy seems to have made several changes to the image, her posture and expression are almost exactly the same as they are in Control.
One is that the in-game missing person placard no longer has her Senate office’s background with the US and California flags on it. Second, Jane Farland is shown looking slightly to her left in the portrait, whereas Harris is staring directly at the camera.
Additionally, Farland’s hair is shown to be somewhat more voluminous. It would have been simple to adjust the variations in the hair and eyes using a tool similar to Photoshop’s Liquify tool.
Kamala Harris Isn’t the Sole Former Us Senator Seen in Control
Totilo asked Remedy to remark on Harris’s intriguing Control cameo, but Remedy did not reply. Her participation could have been due to the developer’s decision to use her image because most US government photos, including official senator portraits, are in the public domain and so free for commercial use.
This argument is supported by the fact that the poster of Steve Fair, a former Pennsylvania senator Pat Toomey’s spitting image, is located directly next to the one of Harris’s lookalike.
The doppelgängers of Harris and Toomey thus seem to be a part of the Remedy Connected Universe, which includes Control and the Alan Wake series, according to confirmation. That being said, none of the characters they had inspired is intended to be a political statement or a representation of their actual identities.
Control’s end credits imply as much, concluding with a standard disclaimer that reads, “The characters and events depicted in this video game are fictional” and states that any resemblance to real-life individuals is “coincidental and unintentional.”
