Now holding the record for the biggest earning animated movie of all time, Inside Out 2 has surpassed Frozen 2. On June 14, 2024, Inside Out 2 debuted in theaters and quickly became a huge sensation.
Shattering records and topping box office charts, the Disney Pixar sequel broke the record for the greatest opening weekend of 2024 to date. It has made $600 million at the domestic box office as of this writing, and it has been in the top three for six weeks running.
Disney confirmed in a formal press release that Inside Out 2 had made $1.462 billion globally at the box office, surpassing the $1.453 billion earned by Frozen II in 2019. This achievement was made possible by the film’s global total.
Inside Out 2 has been doing exceptionally well overseas, becoming the highest-grossing movie in industry history in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay. It is the only movie of 2024 to date to gross over $1 billion at the global box office.
With Barbie in its sights, Inside Out 2 has surpassed Barbie to become the thirteenth highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office. Top Gun: Maverick is its next target.
Inside Out 2’s Achievement Has a Catch
Though Inside Out 2 has officially become the highest-grossing animated movie, it is important to note that there is a significant caveat to this record: The Lion King, which debuted in 2019 and has brought in $1.663 billion at the global box office, technically makes Inside Out 2 the second-highest animated movie.
The Lion King is an entirely computer-generated imagery film with a photorealistic appearance, despite being promoted as a live-action remake. Even while it may not be in the classic “cartoon-style” of animation, it is still animation.
Disney, however, has argued that the film is live-action and has refused to even refer to it as an animated picture; as a result, they did not even submit it to be considered for Best Animated Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Even while many would currently argue that Inside Out 2 isn’t the highest-grossing animated film, the movie has the potential to eclipse The Lion King’s overall box office earnings and render the debate moot.
Because of how well the movie has held up over the summer, Inside Out 2 is probably going to be the highest-grossing film of the year—that is, unless Deadpool & Wolverine perform better than anticipated.
Given that Inside Out 2 is scheduled to debut this weekend in Japan, its final significant overseas market, it does stand a chance to eclipse The Lion King.
Inside Out 2’s accomplishments remain unaffected even if it fails to surpass The Lion King. It has already surpassed renowned movies like Toy Story 3, Incredibles 2, and Finding Dory to become the highest-grossing Pixar movie globally.
The film has actually taken longer to release than the other six Pixar films put together, partly because of the Covid epidemic and partly because people are generally not like of the new Pixar characters. We shall see how long Inside Out 2 can hold onto its title as the studio’s top grossing film ever, given that projects like Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 are now under development.
