Luke Skywalker is a fictional character and the protagonist of George Lucas’ first film trilogy in the Star Wars franchise. Luke, played by Mark Hamill, first debuted in Star Wars (1977), and then in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
Over three decades later, Hamill reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, first appearing in The Force Awakens (2015) before starring in The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2018).
Later, in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, he played a digitally aged version of the character in the second-season finale, which premiered in 2020, and in The Book of Boba Fett, in the sixth episode, which premiered in 2022.
Mark Hamill has claimed that Luke Skywalker’s sexuality is whatever fans want it to be, and that “of course” the Jedi Master may have been gay.
In the Legends timeline, Luke meets a smuggler named Mara Jade, who was formerly the Emperor’s Hand and believes Luke murdered Palpatine. During their journey, she realized the Emperor had lied to her about his death, but her order to assassinate Luke persisted.
She is liberated from her servitude to Palpatine by murdering Luke’s clone, and the bond between the two Jedi strengthens, culminating in Luke proposing to her.
While Leia and Han had a romantic relationship in the original trilogy, Luke never had a romantic interest in the plot. As a result, his sexuality has never been verified, and as a result, the character has become essential to Star Wars fans of all ages.

Fans are inclined to consider actor Mark Hamill’s view on Luke’s identity because he is the face of the renowned Jedi Master. In summary, he supports any interpretation of the figure that provides solace to marginalized individuals.
“I just read online that JJ is really open to that,” the actor remarked in a 2016 interview with The Sun. The director of The Force Awakens and The Rise Of Skywalker stated at the Oscar Wilde Awards that it would be “insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive” to believe that non-normative sexualities would not be a part of the galaxy far, far away.
“In the old days, you’d get fan mail,” Hamill remarked. “However, now fans are emailing and asking these questions: ‘I’m bullied at school… I’m terrified to come out.’
“‘Could Luke be gay?‘ they ask.” I believe it is intended to be perceived by the audience. If you think Luke is gay, he is, of course,” he said. “You should not be ashamed of yourself. “Judge Luke based on his character, not who he loves.”
That’s all there is to it. Luke returned at the end of The Mandalorian’s second season to collect Grogu and train him in his use of the force.
The Jedi Master may or may not return in the third season, but the two characters are depicted in a new poster, creating a lightsaber together.
