After playing James Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service for 55 years, George Lazenby has made the decision to retire from acting. On Wednesday, July 24, he posted on Instagram to share the news.

It’s time to announce my retirement from work, even if it wasn’t an easy decision to make. I therefore hereby declare that as of today, I will no longer be performing, appearing in public, conducting interviews, or signing autographs,” he captioned the image. “Aging is not enjoyable, but the journey has been enjoyable.”

I am grateful to Anders Frejdh, my manager and friend, for his assistance since 2013. He has been the best representation I have ever had. I’m able to focus on spending more time with my family now. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone for their love and support throughout the years. It’s quite meaningful to me.

The 84-year-old George was notably selected to play Bond despite having little to no acting experience. The actor, who was born in Australia, started out as a model and did commercials before meeting producer Albert R. Broccoli. The publication of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969 altered his life.

But because he was in just one Bond movie, he has the shortest stay of any actor in the series. George revealed, years after making his Bond debut, that his manager was a major factor in the fact that he never made another Bond movie appearance.

“What do we need to do to get you to sign?’ he asked me. Would you like to travel anywhere in the world for $1 million? In November 2015, George spoke with Daily Mail about producer Harry Saltzman’s requests. Ronan O’Rahilly, my manager, wasn’t thrilled about it.

Do not do that, he said. Clint Eastwood is a man who makes Westerns in Italy for a whopping $500,000. Instead, you could complete two of those. In the late 1960s, Bond wore a suit and had short hair, whereas bell bottoms and long hair were fashionable. We believed that Bond was done. We were in error.

Sean Connery had the role in five different films before taking on the role of James Bond. Regarding his brief tenure as the well-known movie role, George said, “There are moments when I wish I had done one more just to silence the people who think I failed.”

After leaving Bond, George went on to receive over 60 acting credits, which included parts in shows like Superboy, Rituals, General Hospital, The Pretender, and more. He made his preference for the next Bond actor known in March, following Daniel Craig’s exit from the series. According to TMZ, the Dance Angels star supported Aaron Taylor-Johnson to replace James Bond.

There have been no formal casting announcements made regarding the upcoming Fillm movie thus far. Pierce Brosnan, the former Bond, did, however, suggest Cillian Murphy for the part.

While attending the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles in March, he told the BBC that “Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service.”
