Rebel Melanie Elizabeth Wilson was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on March 2, 1980. She grew up in Parramatta and Castle Hill, where she attended Tara Anglican School for Girls.
Wilson graduated from high school in 1997 and placed second in the state food technology competition. She has two brothers and two sisters. In 2011, her sister Liberty and brother Ryot competed on The Amazing Race Australia.
Wilson attended the University of New South Wales after graduating from high school, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and Performance Studies as well as a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2009.
She spent a year in South Africa as the Rotary International Youth Ambassador for Australia. She suffered malaria while in South Africa, which induced hallucinations.
Wilson stated that she saw herself winning an Oscar, which influenced her decision to pursue a career in acting.
